Background Neutralization

A neutral background to your image is a good thing to have as it will help with good colour correction and balance

I hear you say what is a neutral background , well its when the background contains equal amounts of RGB

If you look a item H in the second image below the ratios are well out of balance with the red having over twice the ratio of Green and blue and of course you can see this in the image , so we need the help of the background neutralization tool

It is usual to use the BN tool at the linear stage and will show that here, but can be used at any time if the background colour slips

This is the panel of the tool when opened

A) Reference Image-------Select a reference image that you have created on your image usually a preview placed over a free background area

B) Lower Limit-------------Pixels under this setting will be ignored , usually left as default

C) Upper Limit-------------Pixels over this limit will be ignored . may need adjusting to suit

D) working mode--------- Various mode available but left default for most applications

How to use Background Neutralization

1) Open your image and apply the STF( If using a linear image )so we can see what's going on

2) Apply a preview to that image placed over a free background area (E)

3) Place your cursor in the preview ( F ) and read the RGB readout ( H ) if all are less than 0.1 leave upper Limit (C) as default if not raise it to just above the highest readout

4) Apply the tool to your image

Below is the result after application , notice how the RGB readout is now well balanced and of course the overall image colour is much improved
